A Lazy Person’s Guide to Finding A Book

Can’t find a book that speaks to your child. It happens to the best of us. Today we are so lacking in extra time, sometimes we just need to deal with our child’s reading issues quickly, no matter how guilty that makes us feel. Hey, we are doing the best we can and we are trying to deal with this issue. Books about sports, particularly biographies about athletes are just perfect. There are biographies that deal with so many sports figures from different fields it is just amazing .When I am reviewing children’s books for my recommendations, I read so many wonderful books and I try to keep my book recommendations very limited, but there are wonderful sports biographies out there. For a football biographies I would recommendLegends: The Best Players, Games, and Teams inFootballby Howard Bryant, which is probably appropriate for grades 2nd-6th. The writer is an ESPN commentator, so the style is very different from what you might expect in a sports biography, but I found the straightforward, statistical presentation kind of refreshing. Note, Howard Bryant has out two other sports books for kids, one on baseball ,Legends: The Best Players, Games, and Teams in Baseballand one on basketball , Legends: The Best Players, Games, and Teams in Basketball. You will love them all as will the young athlete in our family. Also on the football shelf of the bookstore, check out Comeback Kid, John Elway’s autobiography written for children. This Denver Bronco player’s message is that we should never stop trying; winners see defeat as a temporary situation. What an important message at a time when children face a world of instant gratification and life is seen as too difficult for their peers. One last recommendation is Through my Eyes: AQuarterback’s Journey, Young Reader’s Editionby Tim Tebow. This inspirational story speaks to all those children who have a hard time standing up when we know in our hearts it is the right thing to do. And I say “we” because I think we have all been those young children at some time in our lives.

Happy reading.
